Check Point Gets Personal

By META Group

Check Point's recently announced Secure Virtual Network architecture includes some significant enhancements to its FireWall-1/VPN-1 product lines. New virtual private network (VPN) client software incorporates a "personal firewall" as well as a security configuration verifier (which enforces security policies on remote users' machines before allowing them to tunnel into a corporate network). While providing a security insurance layer for all remote users, this functionality is particularly attractive for high-speed, broadband access methods (e.g., DSL, cable modems), which introduce additional security concerns due to long-duration (typical) Internet connections. Further enhancements (e.g., high-availability tunneling, integrated QoS, additional PKI support) will decidedly benefit extranet users. Bottom Line: We expect security infrastructure vendors to rapidly enhance functionality for  remote access and extranet VPN implementations during the next 12-24 months.
