| Vulnerability Description A vulnerability has been discovered in America Online (AOL) in its CDDB Active X Control. The Gracenote CDDB ActiveX control is used by multiple products for looking up information about CDs in the Gracenote CD Data Base (CDDB). Gracenote CDDB ActiveX control contains a buffer overflow error that allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a long option string. A remote attacker could exploit this flaw to execute arbitrary code on an affected system. |

Vulnerability Details The vulnerability is due to a buffer overflow error in the AOL ActiveX control (cddbcontrol.dll) that fails to properly handle overly long strings passed to the its method. Successful exploitation could allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code and take control of an affected system. |
Protection Overview
By enabling this protection, SmartDefense will detect and block the vulnerable ActiveX (CDDB) Control application. Depending on the traffic mix, activating this protection may result in performance degradation.
In order for the protection to be activated, update your VPN-1/InterSpect product to the latest SmartDefense update. For information on how to update SmartDefense, go to SBP-2006-05, Protection tab and select the version of your choice.
