Vulnerability Details The vulnerability is due to a memory corruption error in Microsoft PowerPoint when reading an invalid record type in a specially crafted PowerPoint file. A remote attacker could trigger this flaw by convincing a victim to open a malformed PowerPoint file. Successful exploitation of this issue may allow execution of arbitrary code on a vulnerable system. |
Protection Overview
This protection will detect and block the transferring of malformed PowerPoint files over HTTP.
Please note that the protection offered in this advisory may cause false positives by blocking legitimate traffic. We are working on solving this issue.
This issue has been fixed on the update package from October 27, 2010.
In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway/VPN-1 product to the latest IPS/SmartDefense update. For information on how to update IPS/SmartDefense, go to SBP-2006-05, Protection tab and select the version of your choice.
