Vulnerability Description
A remote code execution vulnerability has been reported in the way Microsoft Windows HTTP Services handles NTLM credentials. Windows HTTP Services (WinHTTP) provides developers with an HTTP client application programming interface (API) to send requests through the HTTP protocol to other HTTP servers. The vulnerability allows a remote attacker to replay the user's credentials back to them, creating a reflection attack, and enabling execution of arbitrary code in the context of the logged-on user.

Vulnerability Details
The vulnerability is due to an error in Windows HTTP Services that fail to ensure that a user's credentials are not reflected back and used against the user. An attacker who successfully executed a reflection attack could take complete control of an affected system.

Protection Overview
This protection will detect and block reflection attacks. IPS-1 will detect and block attempts to reflect NTLM credentials across multliple protocols (HTTP, SMB, etc).

In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway/VPN-1/InterSpect product to the latest IPS/SmartDefense update. For information on how to update IPS/SmartDefense, go to SBP-2006-05, Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

To configure the defense, select your product from the list below and follow the related protection steps.
