MPEG-1 Audio Layer 3 (MP3) is a file format which uses lossy compression to compress audio information. A remote attacker could exploit this issue to take complete control of an affected system remotely. |

Vulnerability Details The vulnerability is due the Windows component responsible for processing MP3 files that fails to properly handle specially crafted metadata. A remote attacker could exploit this issue by convincing a user to open a specially crafted MP3 file or receive specially crafted streaming content. Successful exploitation of this vulnerability will allow the attacker to execute arbitrary code on an affected system remotely. |
Protection Overview
This protection will detect and block the transferring of malformed MP3 files over HTTP.
In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway/VPN-1 product to the latest IPS/SmartDefense update. For information on how to update IPS/SmartDefense, go to SBP-2006-05, Protection tab and select the version of your choice.
