| Vulnerability Description A remote code execution vulnerability has been reported in the way the Cinepak codec handles supported format files. The Cinepak codec is a media encoder and decoder supported by the Windows Media Player. This codec allows bitstream encoding and decoding for media files. A remote attacker could exploit this issue via a malformed media file. Successful exploitation of this vulnerability may allow execution of arbitrary code on a target system. |

Vulnerability Details The vulnerability is due to an error in the Cinepak codec that fails to properly handle specially crafted media files. A remote attacker could trigger this flaw by convincing a victim to open a specially crafted media file. Successful exploitation of this issue may allow execution of arbitrary code on a vulnerable system. |
Protection Overview
This protection will detect and block the transferring of malformed .AVI files over HTTP.
In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway/VPN-1 product to the latest IPS/SmartDefense update. For information on how to update IPS/SmartDefense, go to SBP-2006-05, Protection tab, and select the version of your choice.
