Vulnerability Description
Multiple memory corruption vulnerabilities have been reported in Microsoft Internet Explorer. A remote attacker could exploit these issues by convincing a user to open a maliciously crafted HTML file with Internet Explorer, which will cause the browser to crash and may allow execution of arbitrary commands.

Vulnerability Details
The vulnerabilities are due to the way Internet Explorer accesses an object that has not been correctly initialized or has been deleted. To trigger this issue, an attacker may create a malicious web page that will cause Internet Explorer to exit unexpectedly. Successful exploitation of these vulnerabilities will crash the browser, and may allow execution of arbitrary code on the vulnerable system.

Users are protected against this vulnerability if the protection against Internet Explorer 8 Overlap Components found in the Protection section of CPAI-2009-257 has been applied.

How Can I Protect My Network?
1. In the IPS tab, click Protections > By Protocol > Web Intelligence > HTTP Client Protections > Microsoft Internet Explorer Vulnerabilities.
2. In the right pane, double-click the Internet Explorer 8 Overlap Components Memory Corruption (MS09-072) protection.
3. In the Protection Details window, click on Edit. Choose the protection's Action (Override IPS Policy with: Prevent/Detect), and apply Additional Settings.
4. Install policy on all modules.
