| Vulnerability Description A remote code execution vulnerability has been reported in Microsoft Windows. The vulnerability occurs when Windows does not correctly handle specially crafted URLs or URIs that are passed to it. There are a number of known attack vectors for this vulnerability; this protection is against the Adobe Acrobat Reader attack. Vulnerability Details The vulnerability exists in the interaction between ShellExecute and Internet Explorer 7 URLMon component when handling malformed URLs or URIs. A remote attacker could trigger this flaw through the Adobe Acrobat Reader attack vector via a specially crafted PDF file. Successful exploitation allows execution of arbitrary code on the vulnerable system. |
Protection Overview
By enabling this protection, SmartDefense will detect and block malformed PDF files trying to exploit the ShellExecute() vulnerability.
In order for the protection to be activated, update your VPN-1 product to the latest SmartDefense update. For information on how to update SmartDefense, go to SBP-2006-05, Protection tab and select the version of your choice.
