| Vulnerability Description Multiple remote code execution vulnerabilities have been reported in Microsoft Internet Explorer and in Microsoft Speech COM objects. Microsoft Speech is a technology for speech-based interaction with Windows-based computers. Microsoft Speech API (SAPI) provides voice recognition and text-to-speech functionality on Windows platforms. A remote attacker could exploit these issues by convincing a user to visit a specially crafted HTML document or open a malicious web page. Successful exploitation could result in remote code execution on the target system once the malicious page is loaded. |

Vulnerability Details CVE-2007-0218: The vulnerability is due to a memory corruption error in certain COM objects that are not intended to be instantiated in Microsoft Internet Explorer. The flaw occurs when instantiating the vulnerable COM objects as ActiveX Controls. To trigger the vulnerability, an attacker can create a malicious web page that initiates a vulnerable COM Object as an ActiveX control. CVE-2007-2222: The vulnerability is due to a memory corruption error in Microsoft Speech API (SAPI) ActiveX controls that fail to properly handle overly long strings passed to certain methods. To trigger this flaw, an attacker can specially craft a malicious web page that exploits this vulnerability. Successful exploitation of these issues allows execution of arbitrary code on the vulnerable system. |
Protection Overview
By enabling this protection, SmartDefense will detect and block the vulnerable ActiveX Controls and COM objects. Depending on the traffic mix, activating this protection may result in performance degradation.
