Vulnerability Description
A denial of service vulnerability has been reported in the Pragmatic General Multicast (PGM) protocol on Microsoft Windows. PGM is a reliable and scalable multicast protocol that enables receivers to detect loss, request retransmission of lost data, or notify an application of unrecoverable loss. A remote attacker can exploit this issue to create a denial of service condition on a vulnerable system.

Vulnerability Details
The vulnerability is due to the PGM's parsing code that fails to properly validate the option field length of a PGM packet. A remote attacker could trigger this flaw via a specially crafted PGM packet. Successful exploitation of this issue may create a denial of service condition, causing the system to become non-responsive.

Protection Overview
By enabling this protection, SmartDefense will detect and block malformed PGM packets.

In order for the protection to be activated, update your VPN-1 product to the latest SmartDefense update. For information on how to update SmartDefense, go to SBP-2006-05, Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

To configure the defense, select your product from the list below and follow the related protection steps.

How Can I Protect My Network?
1. In the SmartDefense tab, click Network Security > IP and ICMP > Block PGM Invalid Length Vulnerability (MS08-036).
2. In the configuration pane, under Settings > Mode, check Active.
3. Install policy on all modules.

How Can I Protect My Network?
1. In the IPS-1 Policy Manager, click on the Protection tab.
2. In the Protection tree, click Network Security > Pragmatic General Multicast Protocol, and select the PGM Protocol Compliance protection group.
3. Click Option Length Alert (IPS-1 NGX R65 only).
4. In the configuration pane, under Settings, check Active.
5. Click on Install Policy.

How Do I Know if My Network is Under Attack?
Upon attack, the following entry will be logged:
