Vulnerability Description
A remote code execution vulnerability has been reported in Microsoft Office Outlook. Microsoft Office Outlook is a personal information manager that provides an e-mail application, a calendar and task and contact management. A remote attacker can exploit this vulnerability by convincing a user to visit a specially crafted Web site. Successful exploitation could result in execution of arbitrary code on the affected system.

Vulnerability Details
The vulnerability is due to an error in Microsoft Office Outlook that fails to properly validate mailto URIs passed to it. A remote attacker could exploit this issue by convincing a user to visit a malicious Web site. Successful exploitation of this issue could allow the attacker take complete control of an affected user’s Outlook client.

Protection Overview
By enabling this protection, SmartDefense will detect and block any attempt to exploit this vulnerability. Depending on the traffic mix, activating this protection may result in performance degradation.

In order for the protection to be activated, update your VPN-1/InterSpect product to the latest SmartDefense update. For information on how to update SmartDefense, go to SBP-2006-05, Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

To configure the defense, select your product from the list below and follow the related protection steps.

How Can I Protect My Network?
1. In the SmartDefense tab, click Web Intelligence > HTTP Client Protections > Microsoft Internet Explorer Vulnerabilities > Block Microsoft Outlook URI Vulnerability (MS08-015).
2. In the configuration pane, under Settings > Mode, check Active.
3. Install policy on all modules.
