Vulnerability Description
A remote code execution vulnerability has been reported in Microsoft Windows internet printing service. The internet printing service is a component that allows printing using a remote printer in the network. A remote attacker may exploit this issue to execute arbitrary code on a vulnerable system.

Vulnerability Details
The vulnerability is due to a flaw in the Microsoft Internet Printing Protocol (IPP) implementation on Windows servers running IIS. A remote attacker could exploit this flaw via a specially crafted Remote Procedure Call (RPC) request. Successful exploitation of this issue may allow the attacker to execute arbitrary code on an affected system.

Protection Overview
By enabling this protection, SmartDefense will detect and block malformed RPC requests sent from the printing server.

In order for the protection to be activated, update your VPN-1 product to the latest SmartDefense update. For information on how to update SmartDefense, go to SBP-2006-05, Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

To configure the defense, select your product from the list below and follow the related protection steps.

How Can I Protect My Network?
1. In the SmartDefense tab, click Application Intelligence > MS-RPC > MS-RPC over CIFS > Block Windows Internet Printing Service Buffer Overflow (MS08-062).
2. In the configuration pane, under Settings > Mode, check Active.
3. Install policy on all modules.

1. In the IPS-1 Policy Manager, click on the Protection tab.
2. In the Protection tree, click Application Intelligence > MS-RPC, and select the MSRPC Print Spooler protection group.  
3. Click MSRPC Large pcbNeeded value in SPOOLSS EnumJobs response (IPS-1 NGX R65 only).
4. In the configuration pane, under Settings, check Active.
5. Click on Install Policy.

How Do I Know if My Network is Under Attack?
Upon attack, the following entries will be logged:

Alert Name: msrpc_ms05043
Description: large_pcbneeded_value_alert
