Vulnerability Description
A remote code execution vulnerability has been reported in the ActiveX Speech Components sapi.dll. This ActiveX is part of the Microsoft Speech Application Programming Interface (SAPI) that allows the use of speech recognition and speech synthesis within Windows applications. A remote attacker can exploit this vulnerability by convincing a user to visit a specially crafted Web page. Successful exploitation could result in execution of arbitrary code on the affected system.

Vulnerability Details
The vulnerability is caused when the vulnerable ActiveX control is used in Microsoft Internet Explorer. A remote attacker could exploit this issue by convincing a user to visit a malicious Web page. Successful exploitation of this issue could allow remote code execution on the affected system via an audio instruction.

Protection Overview
By enabling this protection, SmartDefense will detect and block the vulnerable ActiveX Control. Depending on the traffic mix, activating this protection may result in performance degradation.

In order for the protection to be activated, update your VPN-1/InterSpect product to the latest SmartDefense update. For information on how to update SmartDefense, go to SBP-2006-05, Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

To configure the defense, select your product from the list below and follow the related protection steps.

How Can I Protect My Network?
1. In the SmartDefense tab, click Web Intelligence > HTTP Client Protections > Microsoft Internet Explorer Vulnerabilities > Block Microsoft ActiveX Object Memory Corruption Vulnerability (MS08-032).
2. In the configuration pane, under Settings > Mode, check Active.
3. Install policy on all modules.
