Who is Vulnerable?
Microsoft Windows 2000 SP4
Vulnerability Description
A buffer overflow vulnerability has been reported in Microsoft Windows Print Spooler. The Print Spooler service manages the printing process, which includes such tasks as retrieving the location of the correct printer driver, loading that driver, spooling high-level function calls into a print job, and scheduling print jobs. A remote attacker may exploit the vulnerability to execute arbitrary code on a target system or to crash the vulnerable service via a malformed RPC request.

Vulnerability Details
The vulnerability is due to a buffer overflow error in the Print Spooler when parsing certain printing data structures. A remote attacker could send a specially crafted NetShareEnum RPC request to a vulnerable server that will cause the target to improperly parse the ShareName on the attacker's print server during enumeration. Successful exploitation of this issue may cause the vulnerable service to crash or allow execution of arbitrary code on the affected system.

Protection Overview
This protection will detect and block malformed NetShareEnum RPC requests sent to the vulnerable service.

In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway/VPN-1 product to the latest IPS/SmartDefense update. For information on how to update IPS/SmartDefense, go to SBP-2006-05, Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

To configure the defense, select your product from the list below and follow the related protection steps.
