Vulnerability Description
A buffer overflow vulnerability exists in Oracle BEA WebLogic Server. BEA WebLogic is a Java Application Server platform typically used as the platform for large enterprise web applications.  Specifically, the vulnerability exists in the connector software for Apache HTTP server shipped with BEA WebLogic. A remote unauthenticated attacker can exploit this vulnerability to crash the server (DoS) by sending it a crafted HTTP request.

Vulnerability Details
BEA WebLogic Platform ships with a connector for Apache HTTP server. Connector software refers to the component used by web server to communicate with the application server. The Apache Web server fails to properly parse HTTP requests. Successful exploitation could result in Denial of Service condition.

Protection Overview
This protection will detect and block HTTP requests with invalid version specifications. IPS-1 is preemptive against the IIS long URL DOS attack since June 18, 2004. IPS-1 protection detects attempts to access IIS servers with a URL longer than 4K bytes.

In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway/VPN-1 product to the latest IPS/SmartDefense update. For information on how to update IPS/SmartDefense, go to SBP-2006-05, Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

To configure the defense, select your product from the list below and follow the related protection steps.

How Can I Protect My Network?
1. In the IPS tab, click Protections > By Protocol > Application Intelligence > Database Protections > Oracle.
2. In the right pane, double-click the Oracle BEA WebLogic IIS connector JSESSIONID Stack Buffer Overflow protection.
3. In the Protection Details window, click on Edit. Choose the protection's Action (Override IPS Policy with: Prevent/Detect), and apply Additional Settings.
4. Install policy on all modules.

How Can I Protect My Network?
1. In the IPS-1 Policy Manager, click on the Protection tab.
2. In the Protection tree, click Web Intelligence > WWW 2, and select the Strict Compliance protection group
3. Click Invalid HTTP version in request (IPS-1 NGX R65 only).
4. In the configuration pane, under Settings, check Active.
5. Click on Install Policy.

IPS-1 is preemptive since June 18, 2004 to the following attack vector recently ascribed to CVE-2008-5457:

1. In the IPS-1 Policy Manager, click on the Protection tab.
2. In the Protection tree, click Web Intelligence > WWW 2, and select the IIS Attacks protection group.
3. Click IIS long URL DOS attack (IPS-1 NGX R65 only).
4. In the configuration pane, under Settings, check Active.
5. Click on Install Policy.

How Do I Know if My Network is Under Attack?
Upon attack, the following entries will be logged:

Alert Name: HTTP Compliance
Description: Invalid HTTP version in request

Alert Name: Attacks against IIS web servers
Description: IIS long URL DOS attack
