Who is Vulnerable?
Vulnerability Description IBM Informix Dynamic Server is an online transaction processing data server. IBM Informix Dynamic Server functionalities include an implementation of SQL including SQL statements, data types, and system catalog tables that provide information regarding database structures. A stack-based buffer overflow vulnerability has been reported in IBM Informix Dynamic Server. The vulnerability is due to a boundary error in the oninit process in the IBM Informix Dynamic Server when handling a malformed SET ENVIRONMENT SQL statement. A remote attacker can exploit this issue by sending a specially crafted SQL query to the vulnerable server. Successful exploitation of this vulnerability could result in arbitrary code execution on an affected system.

Protection Overview

This protection will detect and block malformed SET ENVIRONMENT SQL statements sent to the vulnerable server.

In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway product to the latest IPS update. For information on how to update IPS, go to SBP-2006-05, click on Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

Security Gateway R80 / R77 / R75

  1. In the IPS tab, click Protections and find the IBM Informix Dynamic Server SET ENVIRONMENT Stack Buffer Overflow protection using the Search tool and Edit the protection's settings.
  2. Install policy on all Security Gateways.
