SunSoft Introduces Internet Security and Connectivity Software Products
FireWall-1 Enables Internet Access Without Compromising Internal Network Security VARs and OEMs Can Create Plug-and-Play Internet Servers
Atlanta, GA —
SunSoft, Inc., a leading supplier of Internet-related software products, today introduced two additions to its Internet Product Family: FireWall-1(R), the first shrink-wrapped network security solution that enables organizations to access the Internet without jeopardizing the security of their internal, private networks; and Internet Gateway Software for Solaris, a product that layers on top of SunSoft's Solaris(R) operating environment to create easy-to-install Internet servers.
"The introduction of FireWall-1 and Internet Gateway software is a natural extension of Sun's long legacy of providing Internet services for the UNIX(R) environment. We're leveraging this experience to bring advanced services and easier Internet accessibility and connectivity for organizations and their end users," said Jim Billmaier, vice president and general manager of SunSoft's Network Products Business. "With these products, SunSoft is addressing the most crucial issues facing organizations considering connecting to the Internet -- network security and easy access. These products and additional products we'll be bringing to market in the near future are key components in our overall strategy of making the Internet a powerful and secure business tool."
FireWall-1 Robust Internet Security Feature Set FireWall-1 is the most comprehensive Internet firewall security software package available today. With FireWall-1, IS managers can prevent unauthorized access to and from their company's networks, while providing end users transparent access to the Internet at full network bandwidth.
The two major components are a management center with an intuitive, object-oriented graphical user interface (GUI), which assists IS managers to easily implement their organization's security policy, and an advanced stateful multi-layer inspection technology that inspects each packet against the set of security rules and blocks unwanted communication attempts.
The FireWall-1's stateful multi-layer inspection technology combines benefits of traditional packet filtering and application gateways, the two primary methods used to establish Internet firewalls. These benefits include transparency, efficiency, and the ability to handle all Internet protocols and services securely.
Also, the product provides a smooth growth path from a single Internet gateway to an enterprise-wide security system. By installing additional filters in the company's private network, the IS manager can control access between different departments and servers within the organization for in-depth security.
FireWall-1 was developed by Check Point Software Technologies Ltd. and received Best of Show for security products at the Spring `94 Networld+Interop trade show. Further details of SunSoft's agreement with Check Point were disclosed in a releated announcement today at the Fall `94 Networld+Interop trade show.
Internet Gateway Software for Solaris
Internet Gateway Software for Solaris enables OEMs and VARs to create easy-to-install Internet server solutions that provide full Internet access for PCs, workstations and Macintoshes on TCP/IP LANs.
Also, the Internet Gateway Software reduces the time taken to set up and administer an Internet server. For example, IS managers no longer need to spend hours manually editing system configuration files. Instead, with the Internet Gateway Software, the sever automatically configures various system services, such as Domain Name Services (DNS) and "sendmail" while providing a simple user interface for adding mail users. This is easily accomplished without UNIX expertise.
The product also includes Version 3 Post Office Protocol (POP 3) mail servers. With this feature PC and Mac users immediately receive their mail at their desktop without having to download from the server.
System Requirements
FireWall-1 runs on SPARC, Intel 386/486 and Pentium-based computers under Solaris operating environments, including Solaris 2.3, 2.4, SunOS 4.1.3, and complements Sun Microsystems Computer Corporation (SMCC)(TM) new Netra Internet servers. Internet Gateway Software for Solaris runs on SPARC, Intel 386/486 and Pentium-based computers under Solaris operating environments, including Solaris 2.4.
Pricing and Availability FireWall-1 will be available in 90 days and sold by SunSoft's extensive worldwide network of authorized resellers and distributors.
Internet Gateway Software for Solaris will be sold through SunSoft's OEMs and VARs. SMCC will include the products as part of their new Netra family of Internet servers which also debuts today at the Networld+Interop trade show. General availability for the Internet Gateway Software is scheduled for Q1 1995 and pricing will be announced at that time.
