CHECK POINT SOFTWARE TECHNOLOGIES PROTECTS ORGANIZATIONS AGAINST LATEST PRIVACY BUG

Open Architecture Enables Quick Implementation, Network-Level Protection

REDWOOD CITY, CA – June 18, 1997 – Check Point Software Technologies Ltd. (Nasdaq: CHKPF), a leader in enterprise security, today
announced that it is providing network-level protection against the recently-discovered privacy bug in Netscape Communicator and Netscape Navigator. Available tomorrow on Check Point's web site (www.checkpoint.com) at no charge, the downloadable file is easily integrated into existing Check Point FireWall-1 installations, instantly securing networks protected by FireWall-1 against the risk.

Netscape knows of no reports of successful exploitation of this privacy bug, discovered last week by Danish software company, CABOComm. Netscape knows of no reported customer incidents and has already released a fix to the bug for Netscape Communicator available for download from their website at http://home.netscape.com. The bug could allow hostile web server operators to access to data on users' computers over the Internet and could allow malicious Web site operators to retrieve known files from the hard disks of visiting users by mimicking the submission of a form. Under ordinary circumstances, users browsing on known, trusted sites are not at risk. However, if a user visits an unknown, untrusted site, the operator of that site can potentially retrieve files from a user's hard disk through an obscure series of steps. For this attack to work, the hacker must know the exact name and path of the file.

The Check Point solution gives network managers peace of mind that their networks are protected against this security threat at the network, not just the desktop or application, level. Providing this protection centrally at the Internet gateway, rather than on each user's desktop throughout the enterprise, increases the level of protection against all security threats, stopping them at the electronic ‘front door' of the corporation, and makes enterprise security easier for network administrators to manage.

"Check Point's ability to respond so quickly to this latest security threat is yet another example of the flexibility and extensibility of our network security
technology, which is a primary factor contributing to our market leadership in this field," said Deborah Triant, president and CEO of Check Point Software Technologies, Inc. "By providing network-level protection against security threats, such as this highly-publicized bug in Netscape Navigator, our customers can screen out problems at the entry-point to their corporation, eliminating costly clean-up later."

"We take privacy and security issues seriously and Check Point's solution provides an added level of protection to a company's network," said Dave
Rothschild, director of client product marketing at Netscape. "Check Point's solution is an innovative approach to increasing protection against malicious Web sites."

The Check Point Solution

The downloadable file created by Check Point to protect users against this security threat effectively disallows any server on the Internet to initiate a file
transfer request from the client system back to the server. Because of FireWall-1's open architecture, the HTTP parameters can be changed dynamically without requiring a code recompile or shutting down the customer's FireWall-1 site. The downloadable file works in tandem with the new content-based security server features found in the recently released FireWall-1 3.0.
