Security Dynamics Teams With Check Point Software To Create Personal Virtual Private Network Solution
ViPN Integrates Leading Security Technologies to Provide Secure Remote Access over the Internet BEDFORD, Mass. and SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., September 3, 1997 Security Dynamics Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: SDTI) and Check Point Software Technologies Ltd. (NASDAQ: CHKPF), market leaders in enterprise security solutions, today announced ViPN, a personal VPN solution combining strong authentication from Security Dynamics and client encryption from Check Point. The combined solution is designed to provide the most secure method for conducting remote access over the Internet, ensuring communication confidentiality, authentication and integrity. With ViPN, corporations have a secure, cost-effective alternative to expensive private lines for remote access, allowing them to take full advantage of the low-cost universal connectivity of the Internet for long distance internetworking. ViPN incorporates the industry's leading enterprise security technologies: Security Dynamics SecurID two-factor authentication, Check PointTM FireWall-1 version 3.0 server software with encryption, and the new version of Check Point's FireWall-1 SecuRemoteTM 3.0 client encryption software, announced separately today. The combination of these technologies will allow remote users to transfer electronic mail and sensitive corporate data, such as internal memoranda, financial data and other mission-critical information, through their Internet connections without fear of having that data compromised by hackers, men-in-the-middle, snoopers or session hijackers. Without this level of security, remote users could jeopardize the data shared over the VPN, as well as the overall security of the network being accessed. ViPN is available as part of Security Dynamics' SecurVPN Partner Program, also announced today. "Until now, VPN solutions have typically provided technology that keeps communication secure when in transit between users, PCs and terminals. However, authentication of remote users was accomplished with insecure and easily compromised static passwords. The users have no idea if the person at the other end is whom they claim to be," said Chuck Stuckey, chairman, president and CEO of Security Dynamics. "ViPN assures that remote users are strongly authenticated, that their information is secure as it travels across the Internet, and that only the intended recipient is receiving and replying to the information." "VPNs offer companies an enormous opportunity to provide their users with secure communication using the Internet, rather than expensive T-1 or leased lines, to reach company networks," said Dr. Deborah Triant, president and CEO of Check Point Software Technologies, Inc. "ViPN offers the premier one-stop solution for remote access, providing a single package that enables simple and secure communication between sender and recipient." Two-Factor Authentication Typically, VPN solutions rely on passwords to authenticate the remote users on to the network. Passwords can be easily "cracked" or compromised by hackers, thereby making the entire VPN communication suspect. Using SecurID technology, ViPN guards against unauthorized access to the network using Security Dynamics' patented technology, which provides dynamic user authentication via a randomly generated one-time code that automatically changes every 60 seconds. At login, users simply enter their personal identification number (PIN), followed by the code displayed on their SecurID token. Authorized users are able to gain easy access to the VPN. This two-factor authentication provides protection against unauthorized access and substantially greater security than traditional password systems. In the near future, customers will have the option of using a SecurID smart card to perform authentication. Support for Direct Dial-Up and Through Internet Service Providers Using Check Point's SecuRemote software, ViPN extends the virtual private network to the laptop and desktop by enabling secure communications from Windows 95 clients. A key feature of SecuRemote is support for dynamic IP addressing, a critical component of providing secure remote access through Internet service providers. Typically, Internet service providers dynamically allocate IP addresses for users at dial-up time, making this feature a must-have for telecommuters and remote workers using Internet service providers to access their corporate network. SecuRemote also supports secure transmission of data through dial-in sessions directly to the coporate network. Pricing and Availability The ViPN solution, including Check Point's FireWall-1 version 3.0 server software with encryption capabilities, SecuRemote 3.0 and Security Dynamics' ACE/Server and SecurID tokens, will be available beginning September 1997 through select resellers, including Ask Datacommunications, Brak Systems, Cadre Computer Resources, Data Systems West, Madison Technology Group, Netrex, Thurber Technology Group and Tri-Sage. Pricing will begin at $11,390. The ViPN server software runs on SunSoft SunOS and Solaris, Hewlett-Packard HP-UX and Microsoft Windows NT.
