CHECK POINT SOFTWARE TECHNOLOGIES AND TREND MICRO TEAM TO COMBAT INTERNET GATEWAY SECURITY THREATS

Check Point licenses Trend Micro patent for Internet gateway scanning technology to combat viruses, mobile code attacks and e-mail spamming

Redwood City, Calif.-October 5, 1998 - Check Point Software Technologies Ltd. (Nasdaq: CHKPF), a leading provider of policy-based management solutions for IP networks, and Trend Micro Inc., a leader in centrally managed virus protection, today announced that Check Point is licensing Trend Micro's U.S. patent #5,623,600 for Internet gateway scanning technology. The companies' expanded alliance enables customers to purchase a best-of-breed enterprise security solution, including firewall and Internet gateway content scanning technologies, to combat the ongoing threats of viruses, mobile code attacks and e-mail spamming.

The technology will be used in conjunction with Check Point's Content Vectoring Protocol (CVP) API (application programming interface), a part of the company's OPSEC™ (Open Platform for Secure Enterprise Connectivity) policy-based management framework. CVP provides an open specification to enable the integration of and communication with external and third-party "plug-in" content screening software.

In addition, Check Point and Trend Micro will work together to make sure that customers can take advantage of Trend Micro's innovative Java telewindow™ technology. The Java telewindow technology allows the Check Point™ FireWall-1 enterprise security suite to communicate real-time Internet traffic status reports to end users via a pop-up window appearing on the client workstation screen. This window helps end-users more accurately gauge the delivery status of information they have requested for download from the Internet.

"We're pleased to be deepening our relationship with Check Point with this agreement," said Eva Chen, chief technology officer and executive vice president for Trend Micro. "Ultimately, it's the customers who stand to benefit most from alliances between best-of-breed technology providers like Trend Micro and Check Point. Our joint commitment to delivering open and integrated security solutions provides customers with a range of interoperable products from which they can assemble a solution that meets their particular needs."

The two companies have also committed to cooperating at the field and channel level to promote the sale and use of the two products together through Trend Micro's and Check Point's highly focused and qualified reseller and OEM partners.

"We look forward to the technological innovations and marketing cooperation that will result from furthering our relationship with Trend Micro," said Asheem Chandna, vice president of marketing and business development for Check Point Software Technologies, Inc. "Together, Check Point and Trend Micro provide a robust solution to combat the onslaught of spam e-mail, viruses and mobile code attacks at the Internet gateway, as well as providing the security and policy-based management needed by enterprises today."

"The incredible growth of Internet connectivity for corporate users has enabled unparalleled access to information for empowering the knowledge worker", says Jack E. Gold, Senior Program Director, Workgroup Computing Strategies, META Group. "However, with this openness comes increased risk of corporate security breaches that must be managed at the entry point. Managing the security scanning process across all entry points from a single console makes the most sense for an already overburdened IT department."

This agreement extends Trend Micro's current relationship with Check Point. Trend Micro joined the Check Point OPSEC (Open Platform for Secure Enterprise Connectivity) Alliance in April when Trend announced plans to develop the first CVP-compliant virus scanning product for the Solaris platform. Since that time, InterScan VirusWall 2.6 for Solaris has been tested and OPSEC Certified by Check Point and is available for sale now through Trend Micro's and Check Point's worldwide channel of resellers, distributors, VARs and ISPs. Trend Micro's InterScan VirusWall 3.0 for NT with additional e-mail content filtering and spam-blocking controls is currently undergoing OPSEC certification and is expected to be available this October.
