Trend Micro Ships Java Applet and ActiveX Scanning Technology for Check Point FireWall-1

InterScan AppletTrap 2.0 receives OPSEC Certification, patented content security technology now CVP-compliant

Cupertino, CA— July 11, 2000 — Trend Micro Inc. (Nasdaq: TMIC), a leading provider of enterprise antivirus and content security software for the Internet age, today announced shipment of its Internet gateway Java and ActiveX scanning solution, InterScan AppletTrap™ 2.0, for Check Point Software Technologies VPN-1/FireWall-1. AppletTrap stops malicious Java applets, ActiveX, and HTML scripts in web traffic at the Internet gateway before they can compromise corporate security.

With this announcement, InterScan AppletTrap has received OPSEC (Open Platform for Security) certification from Check Point Software Technologies Ltd. (Nasdaq: CHKP) and provides the industry's first patented Java scanning technology for Check Point ™ VPN-1/FireWall-1 on the Windows NT and Sun Solaris platforms.

OPSEC-certified status is granted to solutions that have undergone and passed rigorous testing by Check Point Software. The certification ensures that InterScan AppletTrap and VPN-1/FireWall-1 operate together for seamless administration and operation, and central policy-based management. InterScan AppletTrap is closely integrated with VPN-1/FireWall-1 using the CVP API (Application Programming Interface) to keep malicious Java applets and ActiveX programs from entering networks via Web traffic.

"We're very excited that InterScan AppletTrap is now fully integrated with Check Point VPN-1/FireWall-1," said Oscar Chang, senior vice president of product development for Trend Micro. "Existing VPN-1/FireWall-1 customers can be assured that InterScan AppletTrap will interoperate seamlessly with FireWall-1 and provide a cutting-edge content security solution to stop malicious ActiveX and Java applets before they can do damage."

"We are pleased to award Trend Micro's AppletTrap with OPSEC Certification," said Bradley Brown, director of business development for Check Point Software. "The potential risk posed by malicious Java Applets and ActiveX controls is of increasing concern for security administrators and, with the addition of AppletTrap, Check Point is able to further extend the Secure Virtual Network with a key best-of-breed solution."

Malicious Java applets downloaded unknowingly by end-users can steal, delete or modify information and compromise corporate security. In addition, "buggy" applets can hinder performance and needlessly

consume network bandwidth. By using Trend Micro's content security solution, InterScan AppletTrap, organizations engaging in Internet business communication can prevent malicious Java from entering and spreading through the network.

Internet content security incorporates both active content such as viruses, Trojans, worms, and malicious ActiveX and Java applets, and passive content consisting of offensive or inappropriate emails, spam and excessive use of network bandwidth. Trend Micro develops products designed to fight both active and passive content threats.

About InterScan AppletTrap
Trend Micro's InterScan AppletTrap is a policy-based, centrally managed tool for the Internet gateway that stops malicious applets, ActiveX and other active content. AppletTrap's three layers of protection safeguard Internet-enabled enterprise computing environments through certificate analysis and verification, known malicious code filtering, and Java-based code behavior analysis. AppletTrap requires no client deployment. Its distributed architecture provides robust Internet content security with minimal performance impact at the Internet gateway. The gateway performs certificate checks, quick scanning for known COLOR="#000080"> malicious code, and wraps applets in security monitoring code. The client runs applets with the monitoring code and shuts applets down that violate policy.
