Websense Updates OPSEC Certification With Check Point, Releases New Websense Enterprise for FireWall-1

SAN DIEGO, Feb. 7, 2001 – Websense Inc. has updated its OPSEC (Open Platform for Security) certification with Check Point, giving Check Point FireWall-1 customers the most sophisticated and flexible enterprise filtering products to manage employee Internet use at work.

"OPSEC certification assures network administrators that Websense Enterprise tightly integrates with Check Point's secure virtual network (SVN) architecture to provide a comprehensive firewall-and-filtering solution," said Bradley Brown, director of business development for Check Point Software Technologies. "By using Websense in conjunction with their existing SVN solutions, customers can have a single security policy, conserve network bandwidth, reduce legal liability and improve employee productivity."

In conjunction with the certification, Websense today released Websense Enterprise v4.2 for FireWall-1. New features of the joint product include:

Complete user/group support

Businesses can customize Internet access policies according to department, division and user, as defined in Windows NT 4 and LDAP-accessible directory services. In addition, policies can be set according to an IP address or a range of IP addresses. This means IT managers can set Internet policies by user, group or terminal, such as giving each company department a different Web access policy.

Expanded Websense Master Database

Administrators gain the strength of the newest Websense Master Database, which is the largest and most accurate of its kind, consisting of more than 1.7 million sites organized into more than 60 Internet categories. Managers can enforce fine-tuned Internet access policies, such as blocking active "stock trading" but allowing other "financial" Web sites.

  • New database options

Premium Group I (PGI) is a group of five new categories in the Websense Master Database that includes advertisements, freeware/software download, instant messaging, online brokerage & trading, and pay-to-surf Web sites. Management of PGI categories can save up to 10 percent of network bandwidth and increase employee productivity.

  • Flexible filtering options

In addition to blocking and permitting sites, managers can let employees postpone personal surfing until after work or continue surfing sites they deem work-related. This allows companies to flexibly manage how their employees use the Web at work, helping find a balance between work and play on the Net.

  • Optional keyword screening

For businesses that want an extra layer of protection, keyword screening restricts the ability of users to conduct searches on search engines by specific words deemed inappropriate in a corporate environment, such as "sex."

"This new version of Websense Enterprise showcases our long-term relationship with Check Point," said John B. Carrington, CEO of Websense. "We were a key contributor in 1997 to Check Point's original URL Filtering Protocol specification, and this release demonstrates our continuing commitment to giving customers the most advanced Internet security and employee Internet management (EIM) benefits on the market today."
