Japan's Tagawa City deploys
Nokia IP Security Appliances integrating Check Point software for
Online Government Services
TOKYO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 24, 2002--
Tagawa City in Fukuoka Prefecture in Japan, has chosen Nokia's
(NYSE:NOK) industry-leading IP network security appliances, integrating
Check Point Software Technologies' (Nasdaq:CHKP) industry-leading
VPN-1®/FireWall-1®, to provide robust security, high availability
and throughput for AInet Tagawa, the city's multimedia-driven
online government websites.
With a population of 55,000 and a fiber-optic connection to
the Fukuoka Gigabit Information Highway, Tagawa City's AInet
Tagawa required industrial-strength security and the highest
levels of firewall throughput with high availability features
for the large amounts of data and multimedia traffic traversing
through the network. Services provided by Alnet Tagawa include:
- School Communication System: A service aimed at communications
between schools and enables interactive remote teaching using
video conferencing. The service also distributes video content
on school activities via the Internet to promote school, family
and community interaction, and is capable of downloading to
wireless access devices such as Internet-enabled mobile phones
and PDAs;
- Government Information Disclosure System: An information
distribution system that is compatible on Japan's i-mode and
L-mode phone systems;
- Real-time Meeting Broadcasting System: A public videoconferencing
system of web cameras installed in city meeting rooms that
broadcasts meetings to local residents, with the aim of increasing
community openness and awareness;
- Kyushu Video Library: A video library for Kyushu that allow
all municipalities, industries and schools throughout Kyushu
to distribute visual information via the Tagawa Information
Center
Commenting on Nokia's selection, Kazuyoshi Ohara, General Manager,
Tagawa City's General Affairs Information Policy Division, said,
"Our cutting-edge government service, Alnet Tagawa, requires
a reliable and scalable security solution that is strong yet
fast enough to support the high-traffic nature of the multimedia
content."
The Tagawa Information Center has deployed multiple units of
the Nokia IP530 throughout their network. The pre-configured
feature of Nokia's security solution that allow for rapid deployment
as well as the hardened operating system that delivers industrial-strength
security using VPN-1®/FireWall-1® from Check Point Software
Technologies were some of the key criteria in choosing Nokia.
Tagawa City also lists other factors, such as Nokia's ability
to support IP multicasting necessary for video content distribution,
a feature not found in many other competing products and the
Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol (VRRP), which provides fully
redundant and high availability configurations.
Mikio Yanashita, General Manager, Nokia Internet Communications,
Nokia Japan, said, "It is an honor for us to be chosen by Tagawa
City which is setting the benchmark in community IT services.
As part of the e-Japan strategy, it is a showcase for practical
IT application in society. Our IP security solutions with its
support for IPv6, is a solution for the future and will go a
long way in helping Tagawa City achieve its goal to build a
network that is built using next-generation security technology."
