Check Point Protects Customers, SmartDefense Defeats Blaster/LovSan Worm

Extends Defense Solution to All Check Point Users

REDWOOD CITY, Calif., - August 12, 2003 - Check Point Software Technologies Ltd. (NASDAQ: CHKP), the worldwide leader in securing the Internet, today announced that it is making its defenses for protecting against the latest Internet worm available to all customers. This worm, known as the W32/Lovsan.worm, MSBlast, Blaster/LovSan, or simply RPC worm, exploits a weakness in the Windows 2000 and Windows XP operating systems, which are installed on a large number of PCs worldwide.

Blaster/LovSan propagates by exploiting a flaw in the DCE-RPC port mapper service on Microsoft Windows platforms. In some cases, the worm has been reported to crash the service, resulting in a Denial of Service for infected systems. It has also been reported to carry a payload instructing infected systems to attack a specific Microsoft security site on August 16th.

Defense Mechanisms
The defense against Blaster/LovSan has been available to subscription customers of Check Point Next Generation™ (NG) SmartDefense Active Update Service since April 2003. As of this afternoon, Check Point has made the defenses readily available for all customers to download. The defenses require FireWall-1® NG Feature Pack 3 and up and is available for download.

Users of Check Point FireWall-1® NG with Feature Pack 3 and up who applied the DCE-RPC advisory (CPAI-2003-11) are already protected against this attack. Users, who haven't done so, should refer to the link above to update their security infrastructure.
