Check Point Customers Protected in Advance;
Additional Proof Point for Proactive Protection Against Unknown Attacks
REDWOOD CITY, Calif., — January 28, 2005 – Check Point Software Technologies Ltd. (NASDAQ: CHKP), the worldwide leader in securing the Internet, today announced that its industry-leading VPN-1® Pro Next Generation™ with Application Intelligence and InterSpect™ together provide preemptive protection against the vulnerability in Cisco's Internetwork Operating System (IOS) that could result in a remotely exploitable denial of service (DoS). The vulnerability was reported on January 26, 2005, but Check Point has provided a preemptive defense against it since July 21, 2004.
A DoS vulnerability is present in any Cisco device running Cisco's IOS and enabled for the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP). By sending a malformed BGP packet to an affected device, a remote attacker may cause the device to reload, resulting in a denial of service condition. Users of VPN-1 Pro Next Generation with Application Intelligence and InterSpect who implemented the July 21, 2004 SmartDefense™ Special Advisory (http://www.checkpoint.com/defense/advisories/public/2004/cpsa-2004-03.html) are automatically protected against this vulnerability.
SmartDefense enables customers to configure and update network and application level attack defenses. The SmartDefense console is included with VPN-1/FireWall-1 and InterSpect products. SmartDefense also integrates with the Check Point SMART management and reporting infrastructure to provide a single, centralized console for attack detection, blocking, logging, auditing and alerting. Defenses that are configurable in SmartDefense, such as the defense for the Cisco IOS Malformed BGP packet threat, can be updated and kept current with a SmartDefense Service™ subscription. The SmartDefense Service™ enables real-time updates and advisories that provide additional protection against these new and emerging threats.
A detailed description of the threat and defense is available to subscription customers of the SmartDefense Service. For more information on the Cisco IOS denial of service threat, please see advisory CPAI-2005-08 at http://www.checkpoint.com/defense/advisories/public/2005/cpai-2005-08.html.
