Vanstar Announces New Service To Design and Install Secure Intranets For Corporations

Deal with Check Point Software Will Help Spread Use of Web-based Technologies Among Microsoft Windows NT Users

Pleasanton, CA —

Seeking to meet corporations' burgeoning demands for Internet-based technologies, Vanstar Corporation (NYSE:VST) announced today that it has extended its network consulting, design and implementation service to include network security, a critical issue for Intranets.

To further enhance this new addition to its suite of professional services, Vanstar announced that it will resell and support products from Check Point Software Technologies, Ltd., makers of FireWall-1, a market-leading network security software. Vanstar will sell and support Check Point's new FireWall-1 product for Windows NT, which was also announced today. Microsoft Windows NT operating system is emerging as the standard for LAN servers.

"As corporations begin to explore the Internet, our clients are asking for help in designing, implementing, and maintaining security for Web-based applications," said Jay Amato, president of Vanstar Corporation in Pleasanton, CA. "This is a natural extension of our network management services practice."

Mr. Amato continued: "Moreover, everyone we talk to is concerned with creating a secure Intranet. With Check Point's product, we can design a Web-based environment for Windows NT that is protected against outsiders, as well as offering degrees of security from insiders."

Dr. Deborah Triant, CEO and president of Redwood, City, CA-based Check Point Software Technologies, Inc., said: "Many corporations are revamping their network infrastructure to TCP/IP and are exploiting the tools and capabilities in FireWall-1 for creating secure networks, or Intranets, working with customers, suppliers, or third-parties using the Internet. Vanstar is ideally situated to meet the breadth of customer needs in network security management."

With FireWall-1, Vanstar can design and install a corporate Intranet that is customized to meet any company's security requirements. The network can be designed to protect against external intruders as well as internal, unauthorized users by denying access to the network or to specific servers containing sensitive data within the network.

"I think we will see an explosion in Web-based technologies, as corporations understand that security is no longer an issue and they move quickly to take advantage of the Web's flexible and low-cost technology," said Mr. Amato.
