Company Achieves Check Point Software OPSEC Certification and expands platform support SAN JOSE, Calif., October 9, 2001-- Phoenix Technologies Ltd. (Nasdaq: PTEC), the global leader in system software products for connected digital devices, today announced the formation of a new Security Products Division to support the security concerns of global customers that have implemented the FirstAuthority DeviceConnect solution. In related product news, DeviceConnect has achieved Check Point Software Technologies' (NASDAQ: CHKP) OPSEC® (Open Platform for Security) Certification and has expanded its platform support to include the Microsoft NT 4.0 operating system. Phoenix, the worldwide market leader in system-enabling software, with 80% of the BIOS and BIOSplus platformware market and running on millions of PCs today, added DeviceConnect functionality to its core product offering to better enable trusted security networks within corporate enterprises. DeviceConnect provides a two-factor security solution, which authenticates not only the user, but also the user's PC, offering a lower cost alternative to tokens, biometrics, and smart cards. The company estimates a 10x price savings over such alternatives and is targeting the product at finance, government, and manufacturing sectors as well as at enterprises with large populations of remote access users, such as sales personnel or telecommuters. "Phoenix is dedicated to delivering solutions that reduce the total cost of ownership of PCs, Information Appliances, and other 'endpoints' of the internet," said Albert E. Sisto, Chairman, President, and CEO of Phoenix Technologies. "The high cost of any breach in security of an enterprise network is an important element to be considered and is one that we are addressing through the availability and evolution of DeviceConnect. Particularly in some of the target markets we are addressing, enterprise customers need more than the equivalent lock and deadbolt for their PC networks. With this new division, we are making a commitment to enterprise customers that we will provide the products, partnerships and services--based on industry accepted standards--that will ensure the next level of security, previously unavailable." To help ensure global penetration, the company continues to aggressively develop DeviceConnect. To that end, Phoenix has become a member of the most widely supported security framework in the industry, Check Point's OPSEC Alliance and has obtained OPSEC certification. With this certification, customers can now purchase and install DeviceConnect with the assurance that it will seamlessly integrate with Check Point's VPN-1/FireWall-1 Next Generation market-leading solution. "Phoenix Technologies Device Connect OPSEC certification provides customers with a strong authentication solution for VPN-1/FireWall-1," said Upesh Patel, manager, OPSEC Alliance. "The combination of Check Point's Next Generation VPN-1/FireWall-1 and Phoenix' Device Connect product offers customers a best-of-breed strong authentication VPN solution." Also, the latest product update, shipping this week, supports Microsoft's NT 4.0 operating system in addition to SUN Solaris, and provides enhanced management console and GUI for easier central administration of corporate PC networks. "Carnegie Mellon University has traditionally had a very strong Computer Science and Research program. We're utilizing Phoenix's new security solution in order to protect our online educational infrastructure", says Bob Thibadeau, Associate Deputy Director of Carnegie Mellon's eCommerce Institute. "We are very excited to be one of Phoenix's first customers utilizing this powerful new network security access solution. I feel confident that this will not only affect the PC, but other devices as well, such as disk drives and many other connected devices - the implications for improved security are enormous because of Phoenix's unique and one of a kind trusted device infrastructure. I consider this to be a design win." About
