Finnish Ministry of Education selects Pointsec for protecting notebooks and smartphones

Pointsec implementation provides secure environment for mobile workers

HELSINKI, Finland, – May 16, 2005

Pointsec, the global leader and the provider of the de facto standard for enterprise security software for laptop and desktop PCs, PDAs and smartphones, today announced a contract to provide the Finnish Ministry of Education with encryption solutions for the Ministry's notebooks and smartphones. Using Pointsec for PC and Pointsec for Symbian solutions, the Ministry of Education will secure data on its mobile users' devices against unauthorized use in case of theft or loss of the equipment. The delivery and installation was completed and booked by March 11.

"The Ministry of Education has more and more mobile workers. Securing the information on notebooks and smartphones that users carry with them has become an important issue when planning and implementing our remote access solutions," said Sami Saarikoski, Systems Specialist with the Ministry of Education.

In this procurement, The Ministry of Education uses Pointsec's agreement with Hansel Oy, the Finnish Government's central purchasing body. This agreement makes Pointsec products available to all Finnish ministries, government agencies, funds and public-service companies, the Social Insurance Institution of Finland and the Bank of Finland, according to fixed terms.

The central purchasing agreement is intended to ensure the availability of high-quality encryption products for the government, and to efficiently utilize the purchasing volume of government units. The agreement also aims to enhance the manageability of operating costs.

"Due to new laws and regulations that require data protection, governmental organizations are now taking extra care about information security issues, including the proper use of mobile devices and storing sensitive data on these devices," said Juha Poutanen, Managing Director, Pointsec Finland.

Among the suppliers under contract with Hansel, Pointsec's offering was judged to suit the Ministry of Education's environment best. Another factor in the selection of Pointsec was the support for mobile equipment.
