Government
U.S. Government
National SecurityComputer networks are a critical and indispensable part of the U.S. government and its military organizations. Connections from these networks to other private networks and to the Internet facilitate the real-time information exchange necessary for ongoing operations. Yet, for those with malicious intent, this connectivity and capacity for information exchange represents an opportunity to launch cyber attacks.
The need to secure these networks is not new, and U.S. government and military organizations have historically placed a high importance on security. Still, the events of September 11, 2001 have changed the way computer networks are viewed. They are now widely recognized as underpinning some of the nation's most critical infrastructure-from transportation systems, to the water supply, to financial transactions. With the creation of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), customers are once again focusing on the principle security foundations required to secure networks.
Defense
The US Department of Defense (DoD) operations, at the same
time, are deploying a 'defense-in-depth' approach to network
security (Web, perimeter, and internal and endpoint), in order to continue
to function effectively while under cyber attack. This means
segmenting critical network operations to protect the privacy
and confidentiality of sensitive data. The rise of networked
communications, combined with sophisticated, portable, highly
mobile computer systems, allow military organizations to share
information more rapidly than ever before. This entails high
levels of situational awareness, analytical capabilities to
determine the nature and the extent of an attack, effective
courses of action, and rapid execution across a global infrastructure.
In order to take advantage of these network-centric technologies, however, defense organizations must shift from closed, proprietary network paradigms to modern web-centric based systems that promote interoperability while providing the most robust security and reliability. These data systems offer unprecedented opportunities for DoD organizations, defense contractors, and the military establishment to work more effectively, securely, and efficiently.
