To make National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) information-security publications more accessible, the Guide to NIST Computer Security Documents [PDF] is now available. It’s a freely downloadable PDF, and no registration is required.
In addition to listing computer-security documents by type and number, the guide also organizes them by topic and compliance requirement. Once the document number is known, look it up by its category:
- Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS)
- Information Technology Laboratory (ITL) Bulletins
- Special Publications 800 Series
- NIST Interagency Reports
Up-to-date through 2006, this guide makes it easy to find essential computer-security information from among more than 250 NIST publications. Updates will occur biannually hereafter.
About NIST Computer Security Documents
FIPS is the official series of publications relating to standards and
guidelines adopted under the Federal Information Security Management
Act (FISMA) of 2002. ITL Bulletins each present an in-depth discussion
of one topic of significant interest to the information-systems
community. The Special Publications 800 Series reports on ITL research,
guidelines, and collaboration with industry, government, and academic
organizations. NIST Interagency Reports include final results of work
performed by NIST for outside government and nongovernment sponsors.
