Who is Vulnerable?
Vulnerability Description SMB (Server Message Block) is a file, print, and other network services suite used by Windows operating systems. By sending a specially crafted SMB Rename request, an attacker may cause a remote Windows server to reboot or halt. In combination with successful code injection, this could also lead to remote code execution with SYSTEM Security Level.

Protection Overview

Newer versions than R65 are protected by the "Non Compliant CIFS" protection.This protection will block malformed SMB Rename requests.The detect mode makes it possible to track unauthorized traffic without blocking it.

In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway product to the latest IPS update. For information on how to update IPS, go to SBP-2006-05, click on Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

Security Gateway R80 / R77 / R75 / R71 / R70 / R65

  1. In the IPS tab, click Protections and find the Microsoft Windows Server Service SMB Rename Code Execution (MS06-063) protection using the Search tool and Edit the protection's settings.
  2. Install policy on all Security Gateways.
