Protection Overview

This protection will block any attempt to exploit this buffer overflow and attempts to conceal the attack with multi-context bind calls.The detect mode makes it possible to track attempts to exploit the buffer overflow vulnerability.

In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway product to the latest IPS update.For information on how to update IPS, go to SBP-2006-05, click on Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

Security Gateway R80 / R77 / R75 / R71 / R70

  1. In the IPS tab, click Protections and find the Microsoft Windows Message Queuing Service String Buffer Overflow (MS05-017) protection using the Search tool and Edit the protection's settings.
  2. Install policy on all modules.

This protection's log will contain the following information:.

Attack Name:  Microsoft Windows Message Queuing Service Protection Violation.
Attack Information:  Microsoft Windows Message Queuing service string buffer overflow (MS05-017). Users of VPN-1 NG with Application Intelligence R55 will identify rule 92101 appearing in the SmartView Tracker. . Attempts to conceal attack attempts within multiple bind calls will generate the following logs:.

Attack Name:  DCE-RPC enforcement .
Attack Information:  Unallowed number of context items in Bind Alter context request. Users of VPN-1 NG with Application Intelligence R55 will identify rule 92101 appearing in the SmartView Tracker.
