Who is Vulnerable?
Vulnerability Description The IBM Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) is a product used for storing backups and archiving data. The TSM backup operations are performed by the TSM Backup Server service and occur over the network on TCP port 1500. A remote attacker may cause a buffer overflow via a specially crafted initial sign-on request. This may allow the attacker to create a denial of service condition or execute arbitrary code on a target server. Successful exploitation may result in a complete compromise of the affected host.

Protection Overview

This protection will detect and block malformed initial sign-on requests.The detect mode makes it possible to track unauthorized access attempts without blocking them.

In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway product to the latest IPS update. For information on how to update IPS, go to SBP-2006-05, click on Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

Security Gateway R80 / R77 / R75 / R71 / R70 / R65

  1. In the IPS tab, click Protections and find the IBM Tivoli Storage Manager Initial Sign-on Request Buffer Overflow protection using the Search tool and Edit the protection's settings.
  2. Install policy on all Security Gateways.
