Who is Vulnerable?
Vulnerability Description Windows Print Spooler Service (SPOOLSS) is a Windows service responsible for print queuing. A specially crafted RPC request could cause the spooler to consume all available memory on the Windows machine, and thus cause a denial of service.

Protection Overview

This protection will detect and block the vulnerable MS-RPC request."Block Cumulative Memory Allocations" will block successive memory allocations, which add up to a large amount of allocated memory."Maximum Size of Allocated Memory" enables the user to determine the maximumallowed amount of allocated memory via this MS-RPC interface.The detect mode makes it possible to track unauthorized access attempts without blocking them.

In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway product to the latest IPS update. For information on how to update IPS, go to SBP-2006-05, click on Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

Security Gateway R80 / R77 / R75 / R71 / R70 / R65

  1. In the IPS tab, click Protections and find the Microsoft Windows spoolss GetPrinterData Denial of Service protection using the Search tool and Edit the protection's settings.
  2. Install policy on all Security Gateways.

This protection's log will contain the following information:

Attack Name:  MS-RPC over CIFS Enforcement Violation.
