Who is Vulnerable?
Vulnerability Description Microsoft Server Service provides support for Remote Procedure Call (RPC), resource sharing, and named pipe communication over the network. A remote code execution vulnerability has been discovered in Microsoft Windows Server Service. The vulnerability is due to an error in the Server service that fails to properly handle specially crafted RPC requests. A remote attacker could exploit this issue by specially crafting a malicious RPC request and sending it to an affected system. Successful exploitation may allow execution of arbitrary code on a target system.

Protection Overview

This protection will detect and block malformed RPC requests sent to the vulnerable service.

In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway product to the latest IPS update. For information on how to update IPS, go to SBP-2006-05, click on Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

Security Gateway R80 / R77 / R75 / R71 / R70 / R65

  1. In the IPS tab, click Protections and find the Microsoft Windows Server Service RPC Request Buffer Overflow (MS08-067) protection using the Search tool and Edit the protection's settings.
  2. Install policy on all Security Gateways.

This protection's log will contain the following information:
