|Who is Vulnerable?|
|Vulnerability Description||The Internet Group Management Protocol (IGMP) is a communications protocol used to manage the membership of Internet Protocol multicast groups. IGMP is used by IP hosts and adjacent multicast routers to establish multicast group memberships. Overly long IGMP queries transmitted over a short period of time may be used to exploit vulnerabilitiesthat are due to insufficient validation by the TCP/IP stack when storing the state of IGMP requests. Successful exploitation of such vulnerabilities may allow execution of arbitrary code on the vulnerable system.|
This protection will detect and block IGMP v3 membership queries that contain a large number of source addresses and are being transmitted over a short period of time.
In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway product to the latest IPS update. For information on how to update IPS, go to SBP-2006-05, click on Protection tab and select the version of your choice.
This protection's log will contain the following information:
Attack Name: IGMP Protocol Enforcement Violation.
Attack Information: Microsoft Windows Kernel IGMPv3 request processing code execution (MS08-001)
