Who is Vulnerable?
Vulnerability Description Microsoft Synchronized Accessible Media Interchange (SAMI) is designed to simplify creating captions for media playback on a PC. SAMI captions coexist with digital media as separate, simple text files. A remote code execution vulnerability has been identified in Microsoft Windows Media Player which is an application for Windows that supports numerous video, audio, and image formats. A remote attacker could exploit this issue via a malformed SAMI file. Successful exploitation of this vulnerability may allow execution of arbitrary code on a target system.

Protection Overview

This protection will detect and block the transferring of malformed SAMI files over HTTP.

In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway product to the latest IPS update. For information on how to update IPS, go to SBP-2006-05, click on Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

Security Gateway R80 / R77 / R75 / R71 / R70 / R65

  1. In the IPS tab, click Protections and find the Microsoft Media Player SAMI Format Parsing Code Execution (MS08-033) protection using the Search tool and Edit the protection's settings.
  2. Install policy on all Security Gateways.
