Who is Vulnerable?
Vulnerability Description PICT is a graphics file format that allows the interchange of graphics (both bitmapped and vector), and some limited text support, between Mac applications. A remote code execution vulnerability was reported in the way Microsoft Office handles PICT files. The vulnerability is due to a memory corruption error when a malformed PICT file is opened by any of the affected Microsoft Office applications. A remote attacker could trigger this flaw by convincing a victim to open a specially crafted PICT file. Successful exploitation of this issue may allow the attacker to take complete control of the affected system.

Protection Overview

This protection will detect and block the transferring of malformed PICT files over HTTP.

In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway product to the latest IPS update. For information on how to update IPS, go to SBP-2006-05, click on Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

Security Gateway R80 / R77 / R75 / R71 / R70 / R65

  1. In the IPS tab, click Protections and find the Microsoft Office PICT Filter Invalid Length Memory Corruption (MS08-044) protection using the Search tool and Edit the protection's settings.
  2. Install policy on all Security Gateways.
