Who is Vulnerable?
Vulnerability Description Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE) is a web browser application that is capable of rendering both static and dynamic web content. The application is primarily used for tasks related to web browsing, such as displaying HTML encoded pages, downloading files, etc. On certain cases, when downloading a file, IE will prompt the user with a "File Download" dialog offering these four actions: "Open", "Save", "Cancel" and "More Info". The dialog includes the file's name. There exists a vulnerability in Microsoft Internet Explorer that may allow users to be deceived into opening a file of a different type than indicated by the file extension. In the case of a successful attack, users are deceived into thinking a file is of a legitimate type, they may open it, allowing a malicious file to be executed.

Protection Overview

This protection will detect and block attempts to exploit this vulnerability.

In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway product to the latest IPS update. For information on how to update IPS, go to SBP-2006-05, click on Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

Security Gateway R80 / R77 / R75

  1. In the IPS tab, click Protections and find the Internet Explorer File Download Extension Spoofing (MS04-024) protection using the Search tool and Edit the protection's settings.
  2. Install policy on all Security Gateways.

This protection's log will contain the following information:

Attack Name:  Web Client Enforcement Violation.
