Who is Vulnerable?
Vulnerability Description Microsoft Publisher is a desktop publishing application for creating marketing materials, managing customer lists and more. A remote code execution vulnerability has been reported in Microsoft Publisher.The vulnerability exists in the way Microsoft Office Publisher opens, imports, and converts legacy file formats. This issue is caused by an error in calculating object handler data when opening a specially crafted Publisher file.The error may corrupt system memory in such a way that an attacker could execute arbitrary code.A remote attacker could exploit the vulnerability by sending a specially crafted Publisher file to a target system.Successful exploitation of this issue may allow execution of arbitrary code once the malformed Publisher file is loaded on a vulnerable system.

Protection Overview

This protection will detect and block the transferring of Microsoft Publisher files over HTTP.

In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway product to the latest IPS update. For information on how to update IPS, go to SBP-2006-05, click on Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

Security Gateway R80 / R77 / R75 / R71 / R70

  1. In the IPS tab, click Protections and find the Microsoft Publisher Pointer Dereference Remote Code Execution (MS09-030) protection using the Search tool and Edit the protection's settings.
  2. Install policy on all Security Gateways.
