Who is Vulnerable?
Vulnerability Description Microsoft Works is home productivity software suite with fewer features than the Microsoft Office suite.The Microsoft Works Converter allows the user to open, edit, and save files in the Microsoft Works file format. A remote code execution vulnerability has been discovered in Microsoft Works Converter.The vulnerability is due to an error in the Microsoft Works Converter that fails to properly validate the font size in malformed Works documents.A remote attacker could trigger this flaw by convincing a victim to open a specially crafted Microsoft Works file.Successful exploitation of this issue may allow execution of arbitrary code on a vulnerable system.

Protection Overview

This protection will detect and block the transferring of malformed MS Works files over HTTP.

In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway product to the latest IPS update. For information on how to update IPS, go to SBP-2006-05, click on Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

Security Gateway R80 / R77 / R75 / R71 / R70

  1. In the IPS tab, click Protections and find the Microsoft Works Oversized Font Buffer Overflow (MS09-024) protection using the Search tool and Edit the protection's settings.
  2. Install policy on all Security Gateways.

This protection's log will contain the following information:
