Who is Vulnerable?
Vulnerability Description Microsoft Exchange Server is a messaging and collaboration server. It is an extensive application designed to provide email and scheduling capabilities for medium to large organizations. The server has the capability to communicate with email clients and other servers using the SMTP protocol. A vulnerability exists in Microsoft Exchange Server's SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) handler. By sending a crafted SMTP command to the target server, a buffer overflow condition can be triggered. This vulnerability can allow an attacker to cause a denial of service, or execute code in the System security context on the target system. In case of an attack, aimed in causing denial of service condition, the target will no longer respond to SMTP requests. In case of an attack where code injection and execution is successful, the behvior of the target is dependent in the intended function of the injected code. Any code injected will run in the security context of system privilege level.

Protection Overview

This protection will detect and block attempts to exploit this vulnerability.

In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway product to the latest IPS update. For information on how to update IPS, go to SBP-2006-05, click on Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

Security Gateway R80 / R77 / R75

  1. In the IPS tab, click Protections and find the Microsoft Exchange Server Buffer Overflow protection using the Search tool and Edit the protection's settings.
  2. Install policy on all Security Gateways.

This protection's log will contain the following information:

Attack Name:  SMTP Protection Violation.
