Who is Vulnerable?
Vulnerability Description Oracle Application Server Web Cache is a Web portal acceleration software provided by Oracle. It can cache both static and dynamic content and improve scalability and availability of Oracle applications accessed through HTTP. There exists a vulnerability in the way the Oracle Application Server validates the destination location of Web Cache dump files. The vulnerability is created as a result of an insufficient restrictions placed on access rights to the file system. A user with administrative privileges may exploit this vulnerability to place Web Cache dump files into arbitrary locations on the file system. The ability for the web cache administrator to place the cache log file anywhere on the target file system
creates a potential risk. The cache dump contents may be appended to any existing system file. Data corruption attacks may be performed against critical system files, which may cause relevant services to fail to start.

Protection Overview

This protection will detect and block attempts to exploit this vulnerability.

In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway product to the latest IPS update. For information on how to update IPS, go to SBP-2006-05, click on Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

Security Gateway R80 / R77 / R75

  1. In the IPS tab, click Protections and find the Oracle Application Server 9i Webcache File Corruption protection using the Search tool and Edit the protection's settings.
  2. Install policy on all Security Gateways.

This protection's log will contain the following information:

Attack Name:  Oracle Protection Violation.
