Who is Vulnerable?
Vulnerability Description Windows Media Player supports rendering of the Portable Network Graphics (PNG) images. The PNG specification defines a file format that provides a lossless, portable, image compression. Windows Media Player 9 contains a core library wmp.dll for handling the decoding of PNG image files. A vulnerability exists in Windows Media Player PNG processing component. The vulnerability exists due to failure of the application to properly parse fields in the PNG image. A remote attacker can exploit the vulnerability by enticing the target user to open a malicious media file that contains a reference to a malicious PNG, causing denial of service or execution of arbitrary code with the security context of the currently logged in user.

This protection will detect and block attempts to exploit this vulnerability.

In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway product to the latest IPS update. For information on how to update IPS, go to SBP-2006-05, click on Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

Security Gateway R80 / R77 / R75

  1. In the IPS tab, click Protections and find the Windows Media Player PNG Processing protection using the Search tool and Edit the protection's settings.
  2. Install policy on all Security Gateways.
