Who is Vulnerable?
Vulnerability Description The Symantec VERITAS NetBackup Server product suite is an enterprise backup system solution available for various platforms. It is capable of performing scheduled automatic backups as well as manual backups invoked by a client. A minimal backup environment consists of backup clients and a master backup server. The backup server serves as a single management tool that helps to consolidate all backup and recovery operations. A format string vulnerability exists in VERITAS NetBackup products. The flaw is caused by improper handling of the format string data of specific commands. An attacker may leverage this vulnerability to execute arbitrary code in the security context of the affected product, normally System or root. In a successful attack, where an attacker can inject code into the vulnerable target. The behaviour of the target is dependent on the intention of the injected malicious code. In an attack case where code injection is unsuccessful, the vulnerable application may terminate as a result of the attack attempt.

In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway product to the latest IPS update. For information on how to update IPS, go to SBP-2006-05, click on Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

Security Gateway R80 / R77 / R75

  1. In the IPS tab, click Protections and find the VERITAS NetBackup Java Authentication Service Format String protection using the Search tool and Edit the protection's settings.
  2. Install policy on all Security Gateways.

This protection's log will contain the following information:

Attack Name:  Veritas Backup Exec Protection Violation.
Attack Information:  VERITAS NetBackup Java authentication service format string
