Who is Vulnerable?
Vulnerability Description Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) is a multi-featured server product that ships with all versions of Microsoft Windows 2000, XP and Server 2003. The product provides FTP, SMTP, NNTP and HTTP services. The HTTP component, known as the WWW Publishing Service, allows for the serving of dynamic content, notably in the form of Active Server Pages (ASP) documents. A buffer overflow vulnerability has been identified in the Microsoft Internet Information Services product. The flaw is contained in the component responsible for processing Active Server Pages (ASP) scripts. This vulnerability may be exploited by a user who has the ability to publish ASP pages on a vulnerable host. A successful exploitation may lead to execution of arbitrary code on the target host with limited privileges. Upon exploitation of this vulnerability, resulting in the diversion of the process flow, the affected process will run arbitrary code within its security context. The security context of the process execution largely affects the effectiveness for an attacker in exploiting the target host. Thus, the impact of exploitation may vary. In any case, the behavior of the target host will be dependent on the intention of the attacker. The functionality of the target IIS server will vary depending on the "Application Protection" settings. In some configuration settings the server will continue to function as normal, in other cases the server may stop functioning, resulting in a denial of service condition.
