Who is Vulnerable?
Vulnerability Description The Common Unix Printing System (CUPS) is a modular printing system for Unix-like operating systems that allows a computer to act as a print server. A computer running CUPS is a host that can accept print jobs from client computers, process them, and send them to the appropriate printer. A heap buffer overflow vulnerability exists in Apple's Common Unix Printing System (CUPS) distributed by multiple vendors. The vulnerability is due to a boundary error in handling of incoming CGI requests and may be exploited by remote attackers to compromise a vulnerable system or cause denial of service. In an attack case where code injection is not successful, the affected CGI application will terminate abnormally. In a more sophisticated attack case where code injection is successful, the behavior of the target is entirely dependent on the intended function of the injected code. The code in such a case would execute within the security context of the affected service, with the privileges of the printer user, normally lp.
