Who is Vulnerable?
Vulnerability Description Microsoft Word is a popular word processing software. A memory corruption vulnerability has been reported in the dynamically-linked library mso.dll which is shipped with Microsoft Word. The vulnerability is due to improper check when processing data in Microsoft Word documents. A remote attacker could exploit this vulnerability by enticing a target user to open the malicious Word file that would trigger the potential memory corruption on the client system. Successful exploitation would cause memory corruption in a way that may lead to abnormal termination of the Word application or potentially execution of arbitrary code in the context of the logged in user.

Protection Overview

This protection will detect and block the transferring of malformed Word files over HTTP.

In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway product to the latest IPS update. For information on how to update IPS, go to SBP-2006-05, click on Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

Security Gateway R80 / R77 / R75

  1. In the IPS tab, click Protections and find the Microsoft Word mso.dll LsCreateLine Memory Corruption protection using the Search tool and Edit the protection's settings.
  2. Install policy on all Security Gateways.

This protection's log will contain the following information:
