Who is Vulnerable?
Vulnerability Description A heap buffer overflow vulnerability has been reported in RealNetworks RealPlayer. RealPlayer is a media player developed by RealNetworks, Inc. The application is capable of playing back numerous formats of multimedia files. Successful exploitation of this vulnerability may enable an attacker to execute arbitrary code in the security context of the logged in user. The vulnerability is due to an error in the way the application validates input while handling IVR files. Remote attackers can exploit this vulnerability by enticing unsuspecting users to open a specially crafted IVR file with the affected application. Successful exploitation of this vulnerability may enable an attacker to execute arbitrary code in the security context of the logged in user.

Protection Overview

This protection will detect and block attempts to transfer malformed IVR files over HTTP.

In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway product to the latest IPS update. For information on how to update IPS, go to SBP-2006-05, click on Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

Security Gateway R80 / R77 / R75

  1. In the IPS tab, click Protections and find the RealNetworks RealPlayer IVR Handling Heap Buffer Overflow protection using the Search tool and Edit the protection's settings.
  2. Install policy on all Security Gateways.

This protection's log will contain the following information:

Attack Name:  Media Player Enforcement Violation.
