Who is Vulnerable?
Vulnerability Description HP OpenView Storage Data Protector is a backup solution tailored for enterprise and distributed environments. The Data Protector environment consists of a Cell Manager, backup agents, and backup device servers. A stack buffer overflow vulnerability has been reported in HP Data Protector manager server. The vulnerability is due to a boundary error in the Media Management Daemon, MMD.exe, service when parsing malformed requests. A remote attacker may exploit this flaw by sending a maliciously crafted packet to the target server. Successful exploitation of this vulnerability will cause the stack buffer overflow that allows overwriting critical stack data which could be leveraged to execute arbitrary code on the target server.

Protection Overview

This protection will detect and block crafted packet sent to the vulnerable service using specific ports.

In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway product to the latest IPS update. For information on how to update IPS, go to SBP-2006-05, click on Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

Security Gateway R80 / R77 / R75

  1. In the IPS tab, click Protections and find the HP Data Protector Manager MMD Service Stack Buffer Overflow - Improved Performance protection using the Search tool and Edit the protection's settings.
  2. Install policy on all Security Gateways.
